“Hi friends,

You are cordially invited to the first meeting of Don’t Tell Me What To Read! A Book Club For Stubborn People.

This experimental gathering is a book club where we do not, under any circumstances, tell each other what to read. Instead, this book club assumes reading is part of your life and sometimes ou want to talk about what you’ve read with other cool readers.

Here are the guidelines:
  1. Don’t tell anyone else what to read!
  2. Come prepared to talk about a book you finished (or almost finished) within the last little while. We are active readers here! No legacy reads!
  3. The book can be any genre or style.
  4. We are asking everyone to bring a shareable offering based on the book. Examples include, but are not limited to:
    1. A snack
    2. A drink
    3. A smell
    4. A texture
    5. Small items (handmade, mass-produced, from nature etc. etc.) to give out or pass around and experience.

The event will take place on Friday September 4th at 7:30pm. Please RSVP by Aug 26th. We’ll decide on an appropriate location once we know how many folks want to attend.

Here are some additional details/an FAQ of sorts:
  1. You can make your book available for borrowing, but you cannot recommend that people borrow it.
  2. It’s all good if you and someone else coincidentally show up ready to talk about the same book.
  3. If you read a book you found out about at book club, that’s beautiful and we love that because you chose that for yourself! We are not anti reading the same thing. We are anti telling me what to read.
  1. Audiobooks count!
  2. You CAN suggest people do/buy/consume/experience things that are not books. It’s literally (pun intended) only annoying when it's books.

Ok that’s all, thanks for reading!!

Xoxo,
Sarah Thompson & Lauren Prousky”
